Welcome to Year 2!
Welcome to Year 2! I hope you've all had a lovely summer holiday and managed to have lots of fun! I hope you are excited and refreshed ready to come back to school. Me, Miss McKeon and Mrs Bragg are looking forward to seeing you, we've got lots of exciting things planned already!
This term we will continue to reward children with dojo points for following our new school rules - be kind, be respectful and be responsible. Please let me know if you cannot access ClassDojo :)
The children will also be using Seesaw to upload their learning so you'll get chance to see what we are up to in class.
Spellings
Spellings are sent home at the beginning of each half term, each week will focus on a different phoneme or common exception words. We will have our spelling test on a Friday. We ask that the children practise these at home. They can do this in anyway they feel is useful - saying them aloud, look cover write check, writing them in sentences, bubble writing, rainbow writing, pyramids etc.
Reading
Reading is one of the most important skills we teach our children, whether it is a non-fiction text to help them research, a set of instructions to help them make something or reading a fiction to improve their imagination and provide them with amazing vocabulary. Just as children walk, talk and grow at different times, so their progression through the skills of reading will be at different rates. The key is for your child to feel positive about themselves as a reader right from the start. To become a fluent reader, your child needs to take on many skills and continue to practice these throughout their lives. Some are specific skills which can be taught, others relate to attitudes, and these they will gain from the adults around them.
We ask that you read with your child at least 3 times a week and record this in their home school diary. Children will be supplied with two reading books every Tuesday, it is a good idea to read this books a couple of times to practise fluency. Children may also choose to bring a reading for pleasure book home, this may not be at their usual reading level but it is a book they are interested in.
Children can also use Oxford Owl at home, this is a website where they can login and read a variety of books, they can also listen to the story being read to them.
