Lateness and Sickness

Please let us know if your child cannot attend school because he/she is unwell on the first day or sickness. A telephone call will suffice. Please also send a letter to the class teacher on their return. We are required by law to publish in our brochure and annual report to parents attendance statistics which relate to unauthorised absences, i.e. absence from school for which no valid explanation has been given.

If a child has to be absent for medical, dental or other appointments please inform the school in writing the day before. Please indicate if the child will be returning for lunch. Whilst realising that it is not always possible to do so, we would ask that these appointments be made outside school hours whenever they can be so arranged. A parent or named representative must collect the child from the school premises.

It is essential that we have a telephone number so that we can contact you if your child becomes ill or is injured at school. It is important to update the information as soon as possible if there is any change in your family circumstances.

Access to education for children with medical needs

At Sacred Heart we recognise that all pupils should continue to have access to as much education as their medical condition allows. Where a pupil’s absence from school is likely to last for 15 working days or less and is not part of a pattern of recurring illness the school will provide the pupil with homework as soon as he/she is able to cope with it.

Health

The school nurse regularly visits the children and contacts parents if further attention is necessary. At regular intervals specially trained staff test hearing and sight. Medicals are also carried out in school and parents are always given adequate notice to attend with their child if they wish.
